Climbing, Gorge Scrambling and Mountain walking
Rock climbing is a wonderful sport combing balance, strength and movement. abseiling and bouldering activities are also a feature of most climbing days, which for all abilities give a rewarding and exhilarating experience. This is a perfect way to build personal qualities such as self-confidence and mutual trust.
Yorkshire gritstone and limestone cliffs on our doorstep are ideal for novice groups and experts alike. For programmes based in mountain areas we are able to lead gorge scrambles, mountain walks and climbs adding to the experience of freedom and adventure.
Caving and Pot-holing
The Yorkshire Dales boast some of the finest caves in Britain. Exploring the pot-holes, stream and fossil passages is a unique experience that is both challenging and inspiring.
The cave environment fosters many co-operative qualities in groups, where looking out for each other and mutual reassurance become the spirit of each underground journey.
Kayaking and Canoeing
Getting on the water for the first time in a kayak or canoe is a great leveller for group members. The learning ‘buzz’ soon follows. The initial nervous few minutes of self discovery, accompanied by a little coaching, quickly gives way to confidence and skill as you cruise alongside your friends. Games such as raft-walking and canoe polo add to the fun.
A little further training and journeys along local canals, white-water rivers and mountain lakes give a whole new perspective to the landscape – and possibly to the way you feel about yourself and your friends.
GRIPS (Group initiative problems)
Group initiative problems are fun, thought-provoking ways of developing group skills (team building). Many of today’s successful companies incorporate outdoor training activities into their own staff development programmes. GRIPS are equally useful for youth groups looking to get together and to improve each group member’s awareness in a team setting.
Classic GRIPS like Spiders Web or Blind radar are often combined the creative use of each particular venue, from a local park to a mountain valley. They give challenging days out with time built in to stop and think about your groups performance.
Safety and Insurance
Great emphasis is placed on the management of safety throughout all activity programmes. It is now a legal requirement that providers of Adventure activities to young people (under 18) need to be licensed.
Community recreation hold the appropriate licence for climbing, abseiling, gorge scrambling, caving, mountain walking, kayaking, canoeing, and sailing activities.
In particular, safety on the day is achieved by qualified instructors with a thorough depth of leadership experience.
Bradford Council’s public liability insurance covers all community recreation activity programmes.
Adventure and Risk
Whilst safety arrangements are a primary concern, the activities we lead are hazardous by their nature. Parents, participants and group leaders must recognise and accept that a certain degree of risk is involved with each chosen activity.
