Heritage
Physical survivals of the past are valued for their own sake and as an irreplaceable part of our local, regional and national heritage. They enable a greater understanding of past ways of life and are often an integral part of the familiar local scene, contributing greatly to the sense of place. To ensure that local distinctiveness is maintained and these assets can be enjoyed by future generations, the most complete examples of the historic environment are protected by a number of different designations. These designations provide varying degrees of protection. Planning Policy Guidance 15: Planning and the Historic Environment (PPG15) and Planning Policy Guidance 16: Archaeology and Planning (PPG16) set out the government’s policies and guidance on the management of the historic environment. This is complemented by local policies, which are set out in Bradford’s Unitary Development Plan.
Bradford Metropolitan District Council has a rich cultural heritage including over 5,800 Listed Buildings, 56 Conservation Areas, 10 parks and gardens on the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England, 202 Ancient Monuments, 1 battlefield on the National Register of Historic Battlefields and 1 World Heritage Site.
