World at your fingertips

A new £10,000 computer room has been officially opened at the Thornbury Centre and Library thanks to Bradford Council

The Centre on Leeds Old Road was awarded £8,000 from Bradford North Area Partnership and £2,000 from Bradford Community Enterprise Network to get its "learning zone" off the ground.

The learning area has six computers in a room next to the library and is offering taster sessions for people who wish to improve their computer skills or are complete beginners, particularly older people.

Library and community centre staff are working together on the project and if there is sufficient demand they hope to get the room open to the public outside library opening hours.

Coun Anne Hawkesworth, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Environment and Culture, said: “This new area really provides a great space for learners to feel comfortable in and it’s a marvellous resource on the doorstep for local people who may otherwise not have access to a computer.

"They can have the world at their fingertips once they can get on the web.

"We know that these learning zones really appeal to people as we already have two very popular ones in Bradford Central library and Baildon library."

Anyone wishing to book onto a taster session on the computer should contact Thornbury Library on 01274 666984.
