Panto Bulls to get youngsters active

Bradford Council has teamed up with some big hitters from the Bradford Bulls and Great Horton Theatre Company for a special production of the much-loved panto classic, Aladdin.

Stars from the Bulls’ rugby league Super League team are taking the opportunity to perform the classic story of good versus evil to promote positive lifestyle messages, which supports the Council’s b active campaign.

Messages given out will focus on the positive aspects of leading a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, citizenship and a positive attitude - all aspects connected with b active, which the Sport and Leisure Service successfully launched in 2003.

Bradford Council’s Head of Sport and Leisure, Steve Warner, said: "We have been working with the Bulls and Great Horton Theatre Company on this project for some time, so it’s fantastic we’ve been able to make it happen.

"No doubt it will be a lot of fun for everyone and it will also deliver some key messages around the importance of being physically active, healthy eating and generally adopting a healthier way of life.

"Understandably, such a unique show has already stimulated a lot of interest and as we are only able to put on two performances, my advice is book early to avoid disappointment."

Some of the stars treading the boards instead of the touchline include Aussies Brad Meyers, Michael Withers and Ben Harris, and Bradford’s powerhouse New Zealand forward Joe Vagana.

Club captain Robbie Paul is assisting with the production. He said: "This is something a little bit different and gives a great opportunity for the boys who aren’t involved to come down with their families and enjoy the entertainment.

"It is for a good cause, especially in light of the recent press about children’s obesity. I’ve been lucky to have always played and been involved in sport and it’s been a massive positive in my life.

"If the kids and families coming to watch the show get more active as a result, then that’s fantastic for all those who’ve worked hard putting it on."

Great Horton Theatre Company is currently celebrating its centenary year and has a long tradition of encouraging people of all ages and walks of life to become involved in theatre and the arts.

The theatre’s John Mason said: "We were absolutely delighted to be involved with Bradford Council and the Bradford Bulls in this production.

"We have a long and proud tradition of community-based theatre and we see this as a way of contributing further to positive lifestyle messages for young people throughout the district."

Aladdin will be performed on September 13 and 14 at 7.15pm, with tickets available from the Alhambra Box Office and the Bradford Bulls.
