£200,000 to stamp out anti-social behaviour

Extra funding is coming to the Bradford district to help stamp out anti-social behaviour.

Bradford Council is to get £220,000 over the next three years to support vulnerable young people who are starting to get into trouble.

The district is one of 52 pilot areas chosen by the Department of Children, Schools and Families to bid to become a "Challenge and Support Area".

This means intervention can kick in at an earlier stage to tackle problems such as truancy, bad behaviour in school or contact with the police.

Young people will be compelled to take some positive action to tackle their problems such as substance misuse or aggressive behaviour. If they don't do this an Individual Support Order (ISO) could be imposed by a court to ensure they meet these obligations.

An ISO requires a young person to get drug or alcohol treatments or supervision by a Youth Offending Team worker. If they don't take up the help they face a criminal record and a fine up to £1,000.

Bradford Council's Executive Member for Safer Communities, Coun Martin Smith said: "We already work closely with West Yorkshire Police, Bradford Community Housing Trust, the NHS, Primary Care Trusts and a range of voluntary sector organisations to provide a balance between support and enforcement in working with young people, parents and families to tackle unacceptable behaviour.

"Challenge and Support status and funding will allow us to further develop our work to tackle anti-social behaviour through offering support to vulnerable young people and their families across the district."
