New square provides a heart for Bingley
Work has started to create a new town square for Bingley.
The square, which is being built at the junction of Queen Street and Main Street outside Bingley Arts Centre, will be an attractive area which can be used for a variety of community events as well as a regular market.
Bradford Council has designed the square following public consultation with residents and businesses who said that creating a 'heart' for Bingley was a top priority.
The square will be constructed using quality stone to complement the nearby conservation area. A new crossing will be built to join the square to Foundry Hill and provide good access to the railway station.
In addition to this work, the Council will be installing a traffic scheme along Main Street between Millgate and Ferncliffe Road to make the area safer for pedestrians. This includes a 20 mile per hour zone to cut down speeds and deter cars from using Main Street as a short cut.
Crossings on Main Street will be upgraded, new street lighting installed and a significant amount of on-street car parking will be provided as part of the work, which should be completed before the end of the year.
Coun Anne Hawkesworth, the Executive Member for Environment and Culture, said: "This work will significantly transform the appearance of Bingley. The creation of a public square will provide a real focal point and a great arena for community events.
"The traffic calming measures should go a long way to make Bingley a safe environment for all. This is an exciting time for Bingley."
The construction is being undertaken by J N Bentley Limited of Skipton on behalf of the Council.
