Lifelong Learning
Lifelong learning in libraries
Libraries have always been about learning - they began life as the ‘poor man’s university’. We are also one of the few institutions who offer free access to all members of the community 'from the cradle to the grave'. The Modern Mission Statement for Libraries includes
- Promotion of reading and informal learning
- Access to digital skills and services including e-government
- Measures to tackle social exclusion, build community identity and citizenship
The present government is recognising:
- Need for newly skilled workforce
- Need for basic skills provision
- Need for adult literacy
There is also scope for much other informal learning, e.g. IT skills, parenting skills, information provision, culture and leisure interests. Libraries are perceived as ideal partners in new learning initiatives. We have already got
- Access to the Internet in all our libraries which can be used as both an information resource and for online learning
- A vast stock of materials - books, media, publications etc
- A knowledgeable staff who can help the public to utilise our stock and to access information
There is also a great potential for libraries to act as gateways to other learning providers by offering information, advice and guidance to customers. By promoting our service more effectively, working in partnership with other learning providers and focusing new learning opportunities in the areas of the district where the community stand to benefit most, we hope to contribute towards equipping individuals with the skills and knowledge necessary to enable them to find their place in the workforce and /or to participate fully in their family and community.
