Life Story Work

Life Story work is a firmly established part of social work practice with looked after children, and is a valuable range of communication methods with children and young people. Life story work gives the child an opportunity to get accurate information about their family, examine their feelings, understand their troubled past, explain why decisions were made, and offer a chance to build a more secure future.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the purposes of life (story) work
  • Learn about the various models developed by Tony Ryan and Rodger Walker and Edith Nicholls.
  • Recognise how this work can help children prepare for life changes
  • Understand how it can help promote Identity
  • Use it to engage in meaningful communication with children
  • Identify how these skills can be incorporated into Care Plans

Aimed at: Bradford Services to Children and Young People: Social Workers, Community Resource Workers, Family Centre Workers, Residential Workers and Foster Carers
