This 14 modular programme is designed to provide a foundation level course for all staff who work in social services, health services, voluntary and independent sectors.

Aimed at: Day Care, Community Support Workers, non MH-specialist Social Workers, Voluntary Sector staff etc.

- Race and Treatment Issues
5. Risk Issues in Mental Health
- Why do we do risk assessment?
- Whose responsibility is risk assessment?
- Distinguishing between risks, dangers and worries
- Factors to consider
6. Carer Perspectives
This session is led by Jen Kilyon from the Carers Project that work with carers of people with mental health difficulties. She will present the carers perspective and ways in which they can be involved.
7. Mental Health Legislation
- Historical background to current legislation
- Civil sections of the 1983 Mental Health Act
- Role of professionals in using the Act
- Role of the nearest relative
- Police powers under the Mental Health Act
- Reviews and appeals under the Mental Health Act
8. Interventions in Mental Health
This session will be led by two community nurses that work with older people. It will examine a range of interventions including medication and side effects, behavioural techniques and therapeutic approaches, particularly relating to work with older people.
9. Eating Disorders
- Anorexia nervosa
- Bulimia nervosa
- Binge eating disorder
- Eating disorder a gender perspective
- Interventions in eating disorders

11. Suicide and Self Harm
- Working effectively with those at risk of suicide and self harm
- This session will look at causes, myths and ways of responding
12. Substance Misuse and Mental Health
This introductory session will refer to legal and illegal substances used in the Bradford district and their possible effects on people's mental health.
13. Parenting, Children and Mental Health
- Parental mental health problems effects on children
- Common mental health problems in children
- Developments in children's mental health services
14. Poverty, Stigma and Social Exclusion
This session will look at the various ways that mental health service users are stigmatised and excluded from mainstream society and current initiatives to combat this.
