Men into Childcare Project
You can help us to recruit more men into childcare, early education and playwork.
Bradford Early Years & Childcare Service has been selected to be part of the national ‘Men into Childcare’ Project. The National Sure Start Unit has commissioned the Daycare Trust to undertake research into existing practice in this area. The aim of the project is to produce a range of practical resources and ideas for use by all Local Authorities to assist in increasing representation of men in the childcare workforce. Bradford Early Years and Childcare Service is working as part of a pilot cluster group with three other Early Years and Childcare Services in the West Yorkshire District.
The facts and figures behind the project
- Childcare is the second most female-dominated occupation, exceeded only by secretaries and personal assistants. 97.5% of the childcare workforce is female
- Only 3% of people taking foundation modern apprenticeships in childcare and 2% on the advanced course are men
- The proportion of nursery nurses who are men has stayed at 1% for over 10 years
- The Government has set a target of increasing the proportion of male childcarers to 6%

How you can help
- Are you a male who works or volunteers in a childcare, early years or play setting? Or do you employ such a male?
- Would you, or a male childcare worker you employ, be willing to act as a mentor to males wanting to get into the profession? (This may include giving advice and support and work shadowing)
- Would you, or a male childcare worker you employ, be willing to be a case study for men working with children?
- Would you, or a male childcare worker you employ, be willing to participate in a ‘Men into Childcare’ focus group?
