Help with your housing costs - Housing Benefit & Council Tax Benefit

To help people on low incomes with their rent and Council Tax bills the council administers Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit on behalf of the Government.

If you are not on a low income but have someone who is on a low income living with you, you may be able to claim Second Adult Rebate.

Who can claim Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Benefit?

Anyone who is liable to pay Council Tax can claim Council Tax Benefit. Anyone who is liable to pay rent for their home in the UK can claim Housing Benefit.

How much will I get?

To work out how much Housing Benefit and or Council Tax Benefit you maybe entitled to Bradford Council Benefits Service will look at:

  • the money that you and your partner have coming in, including earnings, some benefits and tax credits and things like occupational pensions
  • the capital that you and your partner may have. (e.g. bank and building society accounts, investments, cash and property etc).
  • your circumstances, such as:
    • your age
    • the size of your family
    • the ages of your children
    • whether you or any of your family are disabled
    • whether there is anyone who lives with you who could help with the rent and/or Council Tax bill

From April 2008 anyone who rents their home from a private landlord and makes a new claim and is entitled to Housing Benefit will have their benefit worked out under a new scheme called Local Housing Allowance.
