Open Government
Access to Information
The Local Government (Access to Information) Act, 1985 gave the public extensive rights to access information produced by the Council and to attend, as observers, meetings of the Council, its Committees and Panels.
Agenda and reports for meetings, together with the record of the decisions taken - the minutes - are made available for public inspection in the Council's Information Centres, libraries and on the Internet.
Petitions
Lodging petitions as a way of expressing concern is a well-established practice. To build on the open government provisions the Council has extended this practice by allowing a petition to be submitted to the full Council meeting and by letting the organisers of the petition address the meeting.
Public Question Time
The Council has also made provision for Public Question Time at its meetings and at some Panels. A maximum of 15 minutes is allowed for any elector of the District to ask a question relating to any matter which is the responsibility of the Council.
