Councillor Howard Middleton
Councillor Howard Middleton was born in Huddersfield and was educated at Huddersfield New College . From there he passed the Oxford Entrance exam to study at Corpus Christi College , Oxford where he gained an honours degree in History followed by a Masters Degree. He then later qualified for a Post Graduate Certificate in Education from Huddersfield University.
Councillor Middleton's career included working for Ernst & Young, a worldwide firm of accountants, in Sheffield and Leeds . Later he trained as a Further Education lecturer in business and law and taught at York College.
He was elected to Bradford Council in May 1996 and represented the Bolton Ward until 2004 and the Bolton and Undercliffe Ward from 2004. During his political career he has been the Chair of the Bradford North Area Committee with a particular interest in Housing and is also the Liberal Democrat's representative on the West Yorkshire Pension Fund Investment Panel. He also takes a special interest in the Bradford Community Legal Advice Service Partnership (CLASP).
Councillor Middleton takes a keen interest in his local community and is the Director of Community Works (Undercliffe), a school governor at Wellington Primary School , a Member of Bolton & Undercliffe Ward Urban Village Partnership and is a member of the ‘Friends of Peel Park' group. It is his ambition to see the Canal Road corridor between Bradford and Shipley thrive again.
During his leisure time Councillor Middleton enjoys reading, dining out and watching sport - particularly cricket - and is a Member of Yorkshire County Cricket Club. He has continued his interest in history and is a member of English Heritage. He is also a supporter of the Royal British Legion and other charitable causes. He enjoys travel and would like to visit the USA , Australia or New Zealand.
Councillor Middleton is married to Colleen.
Mrs Colleen Middleton
The Lady Mayoress was born in Leeds and was educated at Benton Park School , Rawdon. On leaving school she went to work for the Civil Service working for the County Courts in Leeds, Bradford and Halifax and she currently works for the Bradford Combined Court . The Lady Mayoress will continue to work part-time during her year in office (Monday to Wednesday).
She is Chair of Governors at Peel Park Primary School, a job she finds very rewarding as she is passionate about children receiving a good education and start in life. She is also the Administrator for the ‘Friends of Peel Park' group.
In her spare time the Lady Mayoress enjoys reading, musical theatre and travelling and is also a member of English Heritage.
The Lady Mayoress feels that Bradford is a wonderful place to live and is looking forward to representing the City. During her time in office she looks forward to meeting a wide range of people and especially hopes to visit as many schools as possible.
Specific dietary requirements
Neither of the Civic Heads have any specific dietary needs, though the Lord Mayor is not partial to either trifle or fruit cake and the Lady Mayoress does not eat mashed potatoes.
