We are the enforcing authority for health and safety at work for 9,500 Commercial premises in the Bradford District area. We carry out inspections of premises, investigate accidents and deal with complaints about unsafe or unhealthy conditions.
We provide:-
Advice to businesses
Many of the enquiries that we receive are from business proprietors who require basic information on health and safety at work. Often we can provide this over the telephone and/or send out explanatory leaflets.
Advice to workers
Employees who are experiencing health and safety problems at work may need to discuss their situation with someone outside their company. We may be able to provide advice and/or deal with the query as a complaint. If an inspector makes an investigation the complainant’s name is not revealed.
Advice to colleagues
There are four operational teams which cover health and safety across the District. The Specialist Health and Safety Section ensures that new legislation and guidance is provided to the inspectors and that there is consistency of enforcement and interpretation between the teams.
Health & Safety Grants for Bradford's small firms
The HSE is piloting a small firms grant scheme in the West Yorkshire area. The aim of the scheme is to help small businesses to improve their health and safety standards. The scheme is open to those thinking of starting up a business, new business start-ups and firms that employ fewer than 10 employees.
Bradford’s small firms therefore have the opportunity to apply for up to 50% of the cost of improving their health and safety performance (to a maximum of £1,000) with the remainder of the costs being met by the firms themselves. The grant is available to small businesses who meet the following criteria:-
An annual turnover not exceeding £4,499,004 (EUR 7m)
An annual balance sheet total not exceeding £3,213,574 (EUR 5m)
Not more than 25% of the capital or voting rights of the business is owned by an enterprise that is not itself a small or medium sized enterprise.
Partnership
The Section plays an active role within the Bradford Area Occupational Health and Safety Forum. The Forum provides a network of information and consultation between businesses, public sector organisations, voluntary groups and trade unions.
Leaflets
A large variety of free leaflets on health and safety at work is available from the Section or from the Hear to Help Shop in the City Hall. A full list of the leaflets can be sent on request.
