Welcome to Lister Park Eco Study 2008

Ian Dobson Lister Park Ranger

As part of a combating anti social behaviour initiative Lister Park has received grant money from Bradford West Area Committee Action Planning Funding to promote community ownership to young people.

This we hope to achieve through an Ecological Study of Lister Park involving schools, colleges, NEET (not in education or employment training) candidates and Royds Environmental Wardens who will work with schools in the Bradford west area and encourage the pupils to become Junior Wardens by acting as the ‘eyes and ears’ of Lister Park – logging problems in an Environmental Audit and carrying out litter picks in the spring and summer months.

The whole idea is to raise awareness of green space environments in inner city areas, how they support wildlife and why these green spaces are important to the local communities.

Throughout 2008 we will be running field studies on wildlife i.e. bird, mammal and insects posting photographs of sightings, nests and any off spring. Also the human impacted on this green space i.e. litter, vehicles, visitor numbers and how wildlife adapts to us. We would also like park visitors to get involved reporting sightings of different types of wild life or voice their opinion of the park by email lister.park@bradford.gov.uk or reporting direct to park staff as already happens.

We will be replacing old nest boxes and duck huts ready for the spring to encourage breeding in the park, a display will be set up in Cartwright Hall Animation Gallery for the public to keep you informed as well as a nesting box live camera monitor, we await the residents. This gallery will be also used for wildlife workshops jointly run with Luke Owens, Tracy Uren (Cartwright Hall Education Officers) and myself for schools and visiting families wishing to get involved as well as using the Garden Wall Gallery just out side Cartwright Hall to display art works from the workshops.

The website will be updated seasonally i.e. four times at the end of spring, summer, autumn, winter. The results, findings and schools which have been involved will be posted at the end of each season.

Most importantly we aim to get young volunteers on board to raise there self esteem and maybe give them a direction in life. We would want them to be totally involved with all aspects of the eco study making it more interesting and hands on experience as well as been involved with website inputs.
