Paying by cash, cheque or postal order

Cash can be paid in person at the Council's Main Office, District Offices or Area Housing Offices (see Contact Points). Please take your payment booklet with you, or any other document which has your Account/Payment Reference Number on it.

Please DO NOT send cash through the post.

Cheques or Postal Orders can be paid in person at the Council's Main Office, District Offices or Area Housing Offices. They can also be sent by post to the Council's Main Office at Britannia House. Please post your payment to Department 5 followed by the address shown at Contact Points.

Cheques and Postal Orders should be crossed and made payable to Bradford Council. Write the Account/Payment Reference Number on the back of your cheque or Postal Order. This applies not only to Council bills but also to other major utility bills.

For Council Tax and other major utility bills, please take or send your payment together with a completed payment voucher. If you do not have a Council Tax booklet, or you are paying another Council bill, make sure that you quote the correct Account/Payment Reference Number.

Post dated cheques will not normally be accepted by the Council.

Receipts are not normally issued for payments made by post. If a receipt is required, you must enclose the entire bill and ask for a receipt to be sent.

Are you wasting time or money on any of the following?

  • Drawing money out of your bank or building society
  • Writing out cheques
  • Obtaining Postal Orders from the Post Office
  • Travelling to and queuing at Council Offices (although we try to deal with you as quickly as we can)
  • Paying for envelopes and postage
  • Worrying about whether your payment has been received

If the answer to any of these is Yes, have you thought about switching to Direct Debit?
