Direct Debit

Paying by Direct Debit

This is the easiest way to make payment because your Bank or Building Society does all the work and yet you remain in control.

When Council Tax started on 1 April 1993, 24,000 Council Tax payers and 2,400 Business Rate payers in Bradford paid their accounts by Direct Debit. Those figures have since increased to 76,000 and 6,000 respectively, as more people recognise that Direct Debit is the easy way to pay their bills.

By switching to Direct Debit now, you will save yourself considerable time and effort in the future. This will also help the Council to reduce its costs which, in turn, helps to keep down the Council Tax.

For both Council Tax and Business Rates, we can offer you a choice of four payment dates so that you can pick a date that is convenient to you - either the 5th, 10th, 15th or 25th of the month. For Other Accounts (Miscellaneous Invoices or Sundry Debts) the payment date of the 5th of the month is offered.

With Direct Debit you have no worries about carrying cash, writing cheques or sorting out paperwork and postage. You also won't have to queue to pay as your Bank or Building Society will do all the work for you.

Taking the paperwork out of payment allows the Council's staff more time to give you individual attention. If a payment is not received, we will write and tell you instead of sending out reminders. If we need to adjust your payments, we will send you a bill well in advance.

The Direct Debit Guarantee

This guarantee is given by all banks and building societies that take part in the Direct Debit Scheme. The efficiency and security of the Scheme is monitored and protected by your own bank or building society.

If the amounts to be paid or the payment dates change, you will be told about this at least 10 days in advance.

In the unlikely event that an error is made either by Bradford Council or your bank or building society, you are guaranteed a full and immediate refund.

You are free to cancel a Direct Debit at any time by writing to your bank or building society. If you do this, please also send a copy of the letter to us.
