Employment and Earnings

  • According to the ABI 2003, there are 195,593 employees within the Bradford District. The employment rate, at 71% of the working age population, is growing but still lags behind regional and national averages.
  • Manufacturing still accounts for 18% of the district’s employment, but has experienced a decline over recent years. Conversely, service industries are growing in importance.
  • Following national trends, part time employment is becoming more significant and accounts for 33% of all employment in Bradford.
  • Bradford employment is over-represented by traditionally lower paid occupations such as Elementary Occupations, Sales and Customer Services and Personal Services Occupations, and this is reflected in lower weekly earnings compared to regional and national averages.
