Are you interested in keeping your community areas free of snow and ice?
When weather conditions become very severe (like last Winter) the Council’s priority is to keep main roads and bus routes open and our essential services working.
But our resources can become stretched and we are now calling on community groups to help out.
We are looking for interested groups to volunteer to join us as "snow teams" when the weather gets really severe and snow falls.
We will provide you with shovels and grit/rock salt and direct you to areas within your community that need extra help to keep open…this could be the local GPs surgery, the post office, community centre, places of worship, or areas where you know vulnerable or elderly people live. We can provide you with Health and Safety advice and legal cover.
By working together we can keep more services and areas open and help to support communities at these vulnerable times of the year.
Working closely with our winter maintenance team and neighbourhoods teams on a voluntary basis, you would be providing a valuable role and also be the Council's "eyes and ears" to help us assess conditions of pavements and roads and alert us to any problems.
There has been some concern about being able to clear pavements and roads and risk of being sued. There is no law preventing this and you will face no legal liability as long as you follow common sense and do not make the pavement or pathway clearly more dangerous than it was before.
Please note that we will be accepting enquiries and applications up until the 19th December 2011 but for operational reasons after that date we will make a note of your enquiry for future winter seasons.
