Bikeability
What is Bikeability?
Bikeability training provides the enhanced skills that children and young people need to ride safely on today’s busy roads
There are three Bikeability levels. A child will typically start Bikeability lessons once they have learnt to ride a bike, with 10-11 year olds progressing through to Level 2, and then Level 3 at secondary school (11-18 year olds). Certificates and shiny luminous badges for each level are awarded to children who successfully complete each course and children are encouraged and inspired to achieve all three levels, recognising that there is always more to learn and to enjoy on a bike.
Who is it for?
Children aged 10 -12 attending a school in Bradford. All schools in the Bradford District can ask for free Bikeability training. Bradford Council and its partners have £50,000 to deliver free on-road cycle training in schools.
Who provides it?
The Council and School Sports Partnerships provide training through local National Standards trained freelance tutors. All tutors have an enhanced CRB.
When do the courses run?
Most courses are run during curriculum time and are available to children aged 10 – 12.
Where are the courses?
Most courses are run in local schools
How can I apply?
Training is provided at local schools and parents should ask their child’s school if it is running courses. All schools can access free training - contact Paul Hart (details below).
Bradford Council cannot provide one to one training and it is the school that must request training on behalf of its pupils.
Is there a charge?
The courses are free to children who access a course at their school. Courses are free to schools subject to certain terms and conditions. Children must be able to ride a bike and require a cycle helmet and a road-worthy bike to take part.
