Waste Management

Bradford MDC are committed to diverting as much waste as possible from going to landfill, and working with the public in maximising other more sustainable options on the waste hierarchy.

The Waste Hierarchy
The waste hierarchy

Minimising waste or diverting it from landfill is not just environmentally important but also financially important too. Traditionally in the UK there landfill was the easiest and cheapest option of waste disposal due to plenty of landfill space being available and no legislation about quantities of landfill allowed.

Over the years this has changed and there are fewer suitable sites available for land filling waste, furthermore there are now more opportunities to re-use or recycle waste with the developments in the industrial sector. Along with these changes are growing environmental concerns which has seen public pressure, and government legislation to encourage diversion from landfill.

Bradford MDC has already made large strides forward in waste diversion in recent years:

  • Expansion of kerbside recycling and composting
  • Refurbishment / development of new Household Waste Sites to increase diversion
  • Promotion of home composting
  • Promotion of various re-use / waste minimisation schemes i.e. Real Nappy Scheme
  • Changes to historical practises within collection and disposal processes

We are looking to the future and currently exploring ways we can divert more waste from landfill, by replacing our existing waste disposal contract for landfill, with a long term contract using a treatment process further up the waste hierarchy.
