Bradford & Calderdale Waste Partnership
Overview
Householders in Bradford and Calderdale currently produce around 280,000 tonnes of waste every year. In Bradford, approximately 33% of waste is recycled or composted. In Calderdale, this figure is 41%. The rest ends up in landfill sites.
The Waste Policy Review of 2011 requires local authorities to improve their waste management by boosting recycling, composting and value recovery from waste. Policies are aimed at reducing reliance on landfill and minimising greenhouse gases produced from our waste.
The Bradford & Calderdale Waste Partnership
Bradford and Calderdale face the same problems of dealing with waste and have therefore entered into a partnership. This partnership improves the viability of a project which needs a large investment in new waste treatment facilities. By pooling our resources, economies of scale can be achieved and money can be saved (including procurement costs).
In December 2011 it was announced that Earth Tech Skanska (a consortium of Skanska, Aecom and Waste Recycling Group) was selected as Preferred Bidder to develop a new facility to deal with Bradford and Calderdale’s waste. Since this selection, Earth Tech Skanska has formed the company Pennine Resource Recovery (PRR) to develop the Bradford and Calderdale waste treatment solution.
PRR will design, build, finance and operate new facilities which will treat waste, improve our recycling rate, recover energy and substantially reduce our use of landfill.
