Article 4 Directions
The Town & Country Planning (General Permitted Development) Order 1995 makes provision for certain types of development to be carried out without the need for a formal planning application.
In some circumstances, authorities may wish to prevent people from exercising these rights in order to retain control on the way in which the development is carried out particularly in a sensitive area such as a Conservation Area. This is done by means of a direction under Article 4 of the Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) Order 1995 Order.
Article 4 directions remove specified "permitted development" rights and therefore require a formal planning application to be submitted where one would not normally be required.
