Saltaire World Heritage Site Information

Saltaire takes its name from its founder, Titus Salt, and the River Aire, which runs through the village. Built between 1851 and 1876, it fulfilled Salt’s vision as a place for the efficient production of fine wool fabrics and improved conditions for his workforce.

Saltaire was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2001. It was recognised for its international influence on town planning and as an outstanding example of the progress made by industrial entrepreneurs like Titus Salt in improving social conditions in the nineteenth century.

World Heritage Sites

UNESCO’s (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) World Heritage Committee is responsible for overseeing the protection of natural and cultural sites it has identified as being of global importance. On a day-to-day basis the care of these sites is the duty governments, organisations and property owners across the world.

Management

World Heritage status is intended to ensure that each generation hands on to the next these internationally important sites in a least as good condition as they inherited it. The framework for the long term management of Saltaire is provided by the World Heritage Site Management Plan. Recent research contained in the Saltaire Environmental Capacity Study has helped identify potential threats to the long term conservation of Saltaire.

Planning Controls

The vast majority of buildings in the World Heritage Site are listed to ensure their individual protection. The village is also a Conservation Area providing additional controls over demolition, new development and tree works. The World Heritage Site and its wider setting are afforded further protection by Policy BH14 within the Replacement Unitary Development Plan.
