This May during national walking month we're urging you to take the Great British Walking Challenge
Every step counts as we unite to see how many times we can collectively walk between Land's End and John O'Groats. Throughout May you can log your walking, whether it's to or from school, on the commute to work or taking the dog for a walk.
Join the country as it takes it its feet, register to take part and log your walks at www.livingstreets.org.uk we want as many people in Bradford to take part to see if we can put Bradford at the top of the leader board!
Once you’ve logged on you’ll be able to take walking challenges, share tips, log you miles and see how well your area or workplace is doing on the leader board.
Why walk?
- Walking is the cheapest, simplest form of exercise.
- It improves your health especially performance of the heart, lungs and circulation.
- Lose weight - an average person can burn 400 calories per day by walking 10,000 steps.
- Reduces congestion- If we all swapped one car journey a week for walking instead, car traffic levels would reduce by at least 10%
- It’s a great way to get about and is good for the environment - walking doesn't produce excess carbon dioxide or noxious fumes or cause noise pollution
- You don’t need to concentrate on the walking itself, leaving you free to enjoy your surroundings, chat to friends and family or just relax

Self Guided Walks
If you would prefer to do a walk on your own the countryside & rights of way service have produced a selection of self-guided walks mainly away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist hotspots.
The walks are aimed at showing off the diverse countryside that the Bradford District has to offer.

Walk the World – London 2012 Cultural Olympiad Bradford - Progress, industry, humanity walk
A special audio walk to celebrate the Olympic year.
Walk the World is part of Discovering Places, the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad campaign to inspire the UK to discover their local environment. Special audio walks in different parts of the UK have been produced by the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) including one around Bradford city centre that you can do at your leisure. The story of Bradford is summed up in the city’s motto: progress, industry, humanity.
This walk explores these three themes and discovers a multitude of connections between Bradford and places around the world.
