Access for All

Bradford Building Control Surveyors/officers promote good standards of access and facilities for everyone and particularly for disabled people through application of building regulation standards.

They are looking for:

  • Ramp access into buildings to help disabled people, elderly people and people with push chairs
  • Door openings wide enough to accommodate wheel chairs and push chairs;
    Lifts to permit access between floors
  • Parking spaces wide enough for wheelchair users to manoeuvre in and out of cars
  • Street furniture that is obvious to those with impaired vision
  • Colour schemes to help the visually impaired defining changes in level, edges of steps and assist in getting around the building, particularly large stores
  • Induction loops or infra-red systems to help with public address announcements, particularly important at places of entertainment
  • Reception desks, counters and notice boards at an accessible height
  • Toilets and washing facilities that are accessible and spacious with fittings to allow for use by both parents and disabled people
  • Means of escape provisions that do not leave disabled people stranded.
