Highways works linked to the creation of City Park in Bradford have been completed – and road users and pedestrians have been thanked for their co-operation.
Over the past two years roads have been altered, bus routes changed and new pedestrian crossings created as part of the City Park improvements.
The park’s 4,000 sq m mirror pool is being built on the site of Channing Way which was closed completely in July 2010 and then dug up.
Now Bradford Council has confirmed that all highways works linked to the scheme have been finished.
Coun David Green, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration and Economy, said: "It is very pleasing that the highways element of City Park has been completed to a high standard.
"It has been a major project which has inevitably involved some inconvenience for drivers, bus passengers, pedestrians and city centre businesses and residents.
"I thank them for their patience, understanding and assistance.”
Work has included permanent alterations to traffic flow around city centre streets, particularly around Bridge Street, Market Street, Bank Street, Broadway and Sunbridge Road; new traffic signal controls and changed pedestrian crossings on Princes Way; removal of a Princes Way subway and the demolition of the Hall Ings footbridge.
A significant amount of landscaping work has also been carried out along Princes Way and its junction with Thornton Road, including semi-mature trees, herbaceous perennial plants and ornamental grasses being planted.
The six-acre City Park will include the biggest man-made water feature in a UK city as well as more than 100 fountains and is designed to create a vibrant public space that supports the Bradford district economy over the long term.
Construction of the park is due to be completed this winter. It will be an adaptable public space for people of all ages to enjoy, with areas for rest, relaxation and play, and also capable of hosting small or large-scale events.
