Testing is to begin on a major element of a unique interactive artwork being installed at City Park.
Laser light projectors are due to be commissioned at the Bradford Council scheme later this week (w/c 28 November) as part of Another Life, a piece of public art designed to be ‘played with’ by the public.
Digital cameras will pick up on people moving around City Park and across the mirror pool causeway and a weather and wind monitor will also help to determine where the lights shine and move.
Usman Haque, the award-winning creator of the project, said: “What we are creating is one of the world’s largest permanent digital artworks.
“Another Life has been designed to respond to people and encourage them to play with the space around them and interact with City Park. I hope it helps create real engagement with the park and with other people.
“Being able to project the beams in to ‘spaces’ like the mist and water within the mirror pool, rather than on to surfaces, is a new technique which should create impressive effects.”
Coun David Green, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration and Culture, said: “Usman’s artwork promises to deliver something completely unique to Bradford and will add a very special element to City Park.
“The laser lighting will come into its own after dark so should help to ensure City Park remains popular and active throughout the whole day.”
The custom-made laser projectors have an especially wide beam to add to their visual impact within the mist and also ensure the safety of passers-by.
The six-acre City Park, which is due for completion this winter, has been designed to create a vibrant public space that supports the Bradford district economy over the long-term.
It will be an adaptable public space for people of all ages to enjoy, with areas for rest, relaxation and play, and also capable of hosting small or large-scale events.
Earlier this year, three sculptures and 10 lighting columns measuring 50ft designed by artist Wolfgang Buttress were also put into place at City Park.
