HIGH STREET HISTORY

Turn Back Time was a major BBC One series exploring the history of the British High Street, broadcast in autumn 2010. Five modern day shopkeepers were challenged to go back in time and, together with their families, set up five stores in a real parade of shops and run them exactly as they were run in six key eras of British history, from 1870 to the 1970s.

To complement the show, BBC Learning Campaigns created 12 ‘pop-up’ History shops in empty high street units across the UK – and one was in Bradford! The idea was to create 1930s grocers shop which would give a unique historical experience for people, with an opportunity to explore local history, learn history skills and to create a future legacy for the local area. People contributed memories, photos and short stories about life in Bradford. These were then collected to be used as a resource in the local library. You can see many of them here on the website.
