Black History Month 2010
Black History Month is an annual celebration of Black culture, held in Britain every October since 1987.
It highlights the significance of Black communities in the UK, and remembers the lives and achievements of those whose stories have too often been untold or ignored.
The aims are to:
- Promote knowledge of Black history, culture and heritage.
- Disseminate information on positive Black contributions to British society.
- Heighten the confidence and awareness of Black people to their cultural heritage.
- Support ‘grassroots’ celebration of Black people’s heritage.
Black History Month celebrates the different communities that enrich the Bradford district in many ways, and aims to inspire the next generation of young to write their own chapter of history.
Activities taking place this year include performances at the Alhambra Theatre by the famous Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Judy Peltier and her young performers at the Priestley Theatre, and 'Island to Island' an exhibition of photographs and biographies which covers stories of migration from people arriving in England full of hope and expectation, and some of the stories of those who have returned to their home lands. There are other events taking place, keep your eyes open for other activities.
