Advice for Tenants

Many households in Bradford rent their homes from a private landlord or agent. Private renting is very flexible and a privately rented home can be easy to move into. Often it is the first accommodation people live in once they leave home and, with many people moving around to find work, private renting is a good solution.

The private rented sector is very varied, standards of accommodation and management can also vary. Because of this the Council is working with private landlords to encourage and enforce good standards of private rented property. The Council run an accreditation scheme for Landlords BestBD Homes which ensures a good standard of property and supports the good practice already going on in the city. Recent area based initiatives have also targeted all the private rented properties within Marshfields, Little Horton, West Bowling and Girlington, ensuring that every private rented property within those areas meets the required standard.

We can give you guidance on the legal standards for private rented housing and we also have a range of powers under the Housing Act 2004 that we can use to ensure that private rented properties are safe to live in and meet the required standards.

If you’re already a tenant, thinking of renting from a private landlord, or looking for somewhere to live, then follow the links on the right hand side of the page for information that may help you.
