Will this course be useful to me in my job?

The impact of parental alcohol and/or drug use upon children is becoming an increasingly significant concern for professionals yet remains a topic about which many feel they lack the appropriate knowledge and skills to address.

With this course we hope to broaden participants understanding of issues relating to substance use and parenting, allowing them to feel able to make more informed assessments in this area.

It is expected that participants will already have had some form of basic drug awareness training and have had basic training in Child Protection issues

What does the course cover?

The course is run by Social Workers from the Alcohol and Drugs Team and covers

  • Revision of basic drugs awareness
  • Issues to be aware of when assessing substance misusing parents
  • Understanding and using the ‘Cycle of change’
  • The impact of parental substance misuse upon children
  • Lapse/relapse and prognosis
