Social Care and Health

Trust-Wide SureStart Video

This DVD provides a description of the services offered by Children Centres. It describes the centres as offering an integrated service for all children aged 0 – 5 and their families in order to ensure a ‘healthy, happy and the best possible start in life’.

It states the three main aims of the centres as being:

  1. Teaching children how to get along with other people.
  2. Developing language.
  3. Learning through play.

The DVD provides anecdotal accounts from parents describing the benefits of attending a Children’s Centre. These include meeting other people, building confidence through attending a variety of courses which include: baby message, baby yoga, cookery and parenting courses.

Children Centres provide early education and day care. They provide help and advice through health care workers on a variety of topics which include breastfeeding, healthy eating, stopping smoking, speech and language therapy and support for children with additional needs.

The DVD also describes a wider role of helping parents to find work through liaising with job centres and providing training.

Service users are also involved in the planning and running of centres and as such the Parent’s Voice is referred to as a way to participate and build confidence.

The DVD ends by giving contact information for the Children’s Information Link, where people can find their local Children Centre.
