There are many ways in which deaf people can get enjoyment and information from using their local library. This video has been produced in particular to persuade more BSL users to find out what their local library can do for them.

There are books, CDs, videos and DVDs in libraries to suit all ages. DVD’s include the latest blockbuster titles and a large selection of recent well known films. You can have your DVD for up to a week and pay as little as £1 for the hire. You can have up to 25 items out at any one time.

It is free to use the Internet in libraries and you can have a computer for as long as two hours but we do get very busy so you are advised to book a few days in advance. You can self book from any library computer for future sessions at that library or other libraries.

There are some charges that you need to watch out for. Fines for bringing books back late are 15p per day and there are repeat hire charges for late DVDs or CDs. You can renew books on line.

Services for deaf and hard of hearing people

DVDs

Many of the DVDs in our libraries have subtitles. The DVD player has everything you need to display the subtitles; you do not need additional equipment.
Requests for DVDs can be made free of charge from any library.

Other stock

There is information on sign language and lip reading available in different formats which can be borrowed from some libraries.

Online Learning

Many of our online learning computer courses have the full text on the screen so do not disadvantage a hearing impaired person.

Equipment

Most libraries now have induction loops fitted at their enquiry desks and counters. You can check which ones do here:

All libraries can be contacted by email and some by fax.
