Palliative care is the active, holistic care of people with advanced, progressive illness. The goal of palliative care is achievement of the best quality of life for patients and their families.

Palliative care is based on a number of principles, and aims to:

provide relief from pain and other distressing symptoms
integrate the psychological and spiritual aspects of patient care
offer a support system to help patients to live as actively as possible until death and to help the family to cope during the patient’s illness and in their own bereavement
be applied early in the course of an illness in conjunction with other treatments

Hospices provide palliative care for patients with life-threatening illnesses, along with help and advice for carers. Care can also be provided in the community, through day services. Most people receiving hospice services have cancer, but care is also provided for people with HIV-related illness and some advanced, degenerative, neurological disorders such as motor neurone disease.

Some private nursing and rest homes also specialise in the care of the terminally ill. Support is provided for carers before and after the death of a patient. Macmillan Nurses work at the Hospices and can be contacted there.
