Students cook up a treat at Bradford Foyer
A group of pupils from Bradford will cook a three-course meal for young people living in supported housing.
The meal will be the culmination of a community project on which 13 students from Dixon’s City Academy have worked since the start of this year. The scheme, which received a grant from the Bradford East Area Committee, has been run in partnership with Bradford Council’s Youth Service and Jamie’s Ministry of Food.
The students will serve a healthy meal to young people from four supported housing schemes at Bradford Foyer on Coates Street on Friday, 15 July between 12.30-2.30pm.
Couns Ralph Berry and Sher Khan, area committee members and local community support officers will also attend the event, which will raise awareness of healthy eating and cooking healthy food on a budget. In addition it will promote opportunities for young people to get involved in similar events and activities within their area.
As part of the project, pupils made food hampers out of donations collected from students and staff at the school. These will be distributed to a number of homeless shelters and supported housing projects during the event.
Coun Ralph Berry, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Children and Young People’s services, said, “This event will help the students develop practical skills that can be used throughout their lives while also directly benefitting the young people who will enjoy a freshly cooked three-course meal.”
Pupils involved in the Community Action Project, who attended a 10-week cooking course with Jamie’s Ministry of Food, will gain accreditations for their work in its planning and delivery.
The meal will be enjoyed by young people from Bradford Foyer, Impact Housing, People and Places, and the Bradford City Centre Project.
