Step-up challenge

Young business men and women of tomorrow will be setting out their stalls at a special market event in Keighley and Bradford.

Forty out of the 61 finalists of Bradford Council's Step Up Enterprise Market Challenge will each have their own stalls on Darley Street in Bradford city centre on Saturday, 9 July.

Each team earned their pitch through a challenge set up by the Step Up Enterprise scheme set up in 2009 to get children and young people involved in innovative business projects.

Teams from school groups to youth and community organisations had to design a product or service and present it at a 'Dragon's Den' style panel.

Those who survived the experience were awarded a £100 to progress their product or service.

Items on sale at the market include, growing strawberry plants and turning them into jam, in-car accessories to promote seatbelt use for children, and items from Fairtrade link with a village in Kenya.

Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Naveeda Ikram will attend the event which will take place between 10am and 2pm.

Coun Ralph Berry, Executive Member for Children's Services, said: "These young people have worked very hard on their individual projects and everyone involved in this scheme will have gained a valuable insight into the business world.

“Hopefully some will be inspired to pursue this further in their careers."

Successful traders on the day will have the chance to win a share of prizes worth up to £4,000.

The prizes for most profit and best marketing will be awarded at 3pm with Vijay and Manoy Dayalji from Oriss Printing of IAB Best Young Entrepreneur of the Year, serial entrepreneur David Jones from Sun. Jones and Nikki Vohra Life and Wellbeing Coach.
