School dinners on the up

A growing number of parents in the district are opting for the nutritionally balanced, value for money school meals provided by Bradford Council.

The latest report on the take-up of school meals across the country has shown Bradford remains well above the national and regional average, and our take-up level continues to rise.

Nationally primary school uptake rose to 44.1% from 41.4%. In Bradford however, this figure rose from 55.4% to 56.4%, a level that places Bradford in the top 20 authorities in the country.

Secondary schools across England saw an average increase from 35.8% to 37.6, with the increase in Bradford being from 38% to 39.4%.

Green Lane Primary School in Manningham was the first school in the country to dish up school dinners back in 1907 when 750 of its hungry pupils got meals - thanks to a national campaign by Bradford educationalist Margaret McMillan and city MP Fred Jowett.

Coun Dave Green, Bradford Council's executive member for regeneration said: “We are very encouraged to see that the efforts being made in Bradford to produce first class affordable school meals at a time of increasing pressures on family and council budgets, and rising food and associated costs, is appreciated.

“Bradford has an excellent and well earned reputation for the quality of our school meals. My thanks go to all the dedicated staff within Bradford’s school meal service who are committed to providing excellent value, tasty and nutritious, locally sourced meals to many thousands of local children each day.”
