Open days encourage people with disabilities to get active

Bradford Council is hosting a series of open days to encourage people with disabilities or long-term health condition to take part in regular physical activity.

The sessions will provide information about disability exercises and give demonstrations of disability friendly activities.

They will also encourage visitors to register with Yoodo Sports, which is a pilot initiative to encourage more people with disabilities or a long-term health conditions to take part in sport or other regular physical activity.

It aims to bring people together with an activity ‘buddy’, who may or may not have a disability themselves, and who can accompany participants on trips to the gym, pool or local park.

The free open days will be held between 10am-4pm at:

  • Richard Dunn Sports Centre on Monday, 6 February; Tuesday, 14 February; Wednesday, 22 February; and Thursday, 1 March.
  • The Leisure Centre, Keighley, on Thursday, 16 February; Thursday, 23 February; Thursday, 8 March; and Thursday, 15 March.

Coun Andrew Thornton, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Sport, said: "These open days will help to attract more people with disabilities or long-term health conditions into their local leisure facilities and encourage them to be more physically active. This is a key part of our highly successful b active campaign, which encourages everyone to get healthier and more active.”

Alex Gibbons, Yoodo Sports Project Manager, said: "Disabled people often face the serious challenge of changing people’s perceptions of who they are and what they can do. Beginning a new sport or pastime is no exception.

"These sessions are a great opportunity for local people to find out more about inclusive exercise and see for themselves how enjoyable they are.

"Yoodo Sports enables people from all walks of life - disabled, non-disabled or those with long-term health conditions - to enjoy getting fit and healthy and to discover the motivation to participate in regular exercise. So come along, and find out how you can get involved!”

Yoodo Sports is run by Leonard Cheshire Disability using National Lottery investment from Sport England.
