Marking the start of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations

This weekend sees the first event in the Bradford Diamond Jubilee calendar to celebrate the Queen’s 60th year on the throne.

A civic service will be held at Keighley Shared Church, on Sunday, 5 February, at 4pm.

The Choral Evensong will include the service from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer for the Anniversary of the Accession of the Sovereign, as well as the coronation anthem ‘Zadok the Priest’ and the ‘Come and Sing’ choir conducted by Dr Judy Blezzard. It will be led by the Reverend Canon Malcolm Grundy, the former Archdeacon of Craven.

The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Coun Naveeda Ikram, will attend the service accompanied by her daughter, both dressed in ceremonial robes. The event will also be attended by the High Sheriff, Anthony Grant, and the Deputy Lord Lieutenant for the Keighley area, Richard Jackson.

Coun Ikram said: "This is the first of a number of exciting events happening in the Bradford district to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

"We are encouraging local communities, faith groups, businesses, organisations and residents to get together to mark this historic occasion with events, street parties and commemorative projects.”

Bradford Council is working in partnership with the West Yorkshire Lieutenancy Office (the Queen’s representative in the county) to encourage communities to take part in the celebrations by organising their own projects and events. There are already more than 60 events planned in the district so far.

Next week marks the official start of the Diamond Jubilee year. On Monday (6 February) it will be 60 years since the Queen’s father George VI died. The official Accession of the Queen took place on 8 February.

Many people in the district will remember this historic occasion and an exhibition of old photographs and memories of the Queen’s reign is planned for later this year. If you would like to share your memories or photographs of the Accession – or any other key moments of the Queen’s reign – please get in touch with us on 01274 432276.
