Emerging artists get off to a Good Start

Emerging artists from Bradford and the Aire Valley will have their work displayed at Cliffe Castle Museum.

Good Start 2012 is an annual event that provides sixth form students from local schools with a wonderful opportunity to exhibit their work in a professional gallery setting and work with practising artists and specialists.

The exhibition, which will run at the Bradford Council-run museum between 28 January and 25 March, will display a range of art forms including painting, drawing, sculpture, graphics and photography.

The participating students attended practical workshops at the museum during the autumn term with artist Lou Sumray, sculptor David Mayne, printmaker Angie Rogers, photographer Liza Dracup and designer Maxine Hullock. During the sessions they used the Museum’s varied collections as inspiration to try out new techniques, develop observation skills and explore the practice of individual artists and specialists.

A film shown in the exhibition will explore elements of some of these artist led workshops.

Students from Bradford Catholic Sixth Form and Thornton Grammar School also visited Bradford Museums and Galleries’ social history stores. Following a tour, they did sketches of a range of historical artefacts and costumes.

Both of these initiatives helped the young people to enrich their understanding of art and design, with the high standard of work reflecting their talents and the quality of teaching.

Coun David Green, Bradford Council’s Executive Member responsible for Culture, said: "Good Start helps to build the confidence of students and gives them a sense of history from working in the Museum.

"The exhibition showcases the great emerging talent that we have in our district and also celebrates the partnerships that have developed between our local secondary schools and museums."

Schools taking part include Beckfoot, Bradford Catholic Sixth Form, Carlton Bolling College, Oakbank, Parkside, South Craven and Thornton Grammar School.
