Christmas Recycling

Householders celebrating Christmas are being asked not to forget to recycle the massive upsurge in waste generated over the holiday.

Over the festive period the amount of waste we create will increase by as much as 30 per cent.

Batteries, bottles, cans, cardboard, cards, Christmas trees and wrapping paper are just some of the extra things that should be recycled using a variety of Bradford Council’s recycling services.

Coun Andrew Thornton, Executive Member for Environment and Sport, said: "It’s very important that we don’t forget to recycle at Christmas to cut down on the amount of waste that ends up in landfill.

"Everyone has a great time over Christmas but we want people to bear in mind how much damage to the environment can be done by failing to recycle the extra rubbish generated.”

Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC) will take a variety of material and they are open throughout most of the holiday period except Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and Monday, 2 January.

On Tuesday, 27 December only the HWRCs in Bowling Back Lane, Bradford, and Royd Ings Avenue, Keighley, will be open.

There are several ways that you can recycle your real Christmas Tree. If your home is on a garden waste collection round, then the Council can collect the tree from the kerbside on your normal collection day.

If householders have more recycling than will fit in their normal containers they can put it out in bags and it will be collected.

You can dispose of your real tree at a local Household Waste Recycling Centre and some garden centres also provide this service under the Treecycle scheme in partnership with Bradford Council.

Householders should also consider getting a new compost bin to help them recycle this Christmas.

Compost or recycling bins are available from Bradford Council and make a big difference to the way we deal with waste.
