Boost online skills to trace family history
Bradford Libraries is offering residents another chance to attend its popular free combined course in basic computer skills and family history.
The 8-week course will teach people basic skills, such as how to use the mouse and keyboard, and help them to securely use email and the internet. Staff will then support them in accessing vital resources that will assist them in tracing their ancestry, such as old newspapers, war records and online censuses.
The course will run throughout February and March in the Learning Zone and Local Studies area in Bradford Central Library on Tuesday mornings, and Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.
Coun David Green, Bradford Council’s Executive Member responsible for Culture, said: "Many people are put off tracing their family tree because they cannot use a computer. This course, which was extremely popular when it was launched last year, will provide tips on how to get involved in this rewarding hobby as well as teaching basic IT skills.
"These can then be used to enhance other areas of life, from booking a GP appointment to finding a train timetable, job hunting or emailing relatives and friends.”
For further information, or to book a free place on the course, please call in to the Learning Zone or phone 01274 434870.
Bradford Libraries is supporting the Race Online campaign, which aims to get one million people online before the 2012 Olympics. As part of this, all of Bradford’s libraries have free public access computers and run free weekly beginners computer courses to learn basic computer skills. Please call in to your local library for more information.
