Sustainability, Sustainable Development and Sustainable Communities
There is no separate Sustainability / Local Agenda 21 (LA21) strategy for Bradford District.
Bradford District merged this work in 1996 within the development of its Community Plan for 1997-2000. This was the precursor of the District's current 2020 Vision and Big Plan for Bradford District 2008-11.
The Community Strategy is a living document, and is reviewed annually.
This work is informed and directed by Government statutory guidance Creating Strong, Safe and Prosperous Communities (2008) on preparing a 'Sustainable Community Strategy' and through Securing the Future, the UK Sustainable Development Strategy.
With the emergence of the Local Development Framework and its Core Strategy - as the spatial expression of the district's Vision and Sustainable Community Strategy - having to deliver the Regional Spatial Strategy and contribute to Sustainable Development, work on explicit local sustainable development objectives is under further consideration and development.

The Council and its partners must have due regard to the Government's Strategy for Sustainable Development, "Securing the Future" including the approach to sustainable communities as well as to the Regional Sustainable Development Framework for Yorkshire and the Humber.
Agenda 21 and Local Agenda 21 - the Bradford approach
Agenda 21 is a comprehensive sustainable development action plan which 178 heads of government signed up to at the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Since the 1992 Earth Summit, Bradford Council, in partnership with a wide range of organisations, has been active in translating the economic, social and environmental principles of Local Agenda 21 into practical action.
Strategies such as the 2020 Vision and District Sustainable Community Strategy and the council's own Corporate Plan demonstrate how Bradford is tackling the economic, social and environmental issues outlined in Agenda 21. As a consequence, Bradford's approach to Agenda 21 has been to integrate sustainability thinking and sustainable development into mainstream work, rather than as a separate strategy.
