Mayoral Referendum 2012
Notice of referendum on whether the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council should have a directly elected mayor
- In accordance with Section 9N of the Local Government Act 2000 and the City of Bradford (Mayoral Referendum) Order 2012, the Secretary of State has ordered that Bradford Metropolitan District Council hold a referendum on whether they wish to change the council’s executive arrangements.
- The Referendum will ask whether the Council’s Executive should be changed from a Leader and Cabinet Executive to an Elected Mayor and Cabinet Executive.
- The poll for the referendum will be held on Thursday, 3rd May 2012, between the hours of 7.00am and 10.00pm and will be taken together with the poll for elections to the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council.
- The question to be asked at the poll will be:
- How would you like Bradford Council to be run?
By a leader who is an elected councillor chosen by a vote of the other elected councillors. This is how the council is run now.
OR
By a mayor who is elected by voters. This would be a change from how the council is run now.
- The referendum will be conducted using procedures similar to those for the conduct of a local council election.
- The referendum expenses limit for campaign organisers conducting a campaign promoting a particular outcome to the question being asked at the referendum, will be based on 340,600 electors and will be £22,457.40.
