2011 Census: 27 March 2011

The Census is here!

The 2011 Census will take place on Sunday, 27 March 2011.

Every household in England and Wales will be asked the same questions on the same day so that a snapshot of the population can be taken.

The information is used by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) to estimate the number of people and households in each area and the results are used to plan services and resources people need such as transport, housing, healthcare and education.

The Census asks you for details of your household, including how many children you have, what your occupation is and how many rooms you have in your house. There is a question about your religion which is voluntary.

The information you submit is kept confidential, but turned into statistics which are used to plan community facilities and services, such as healthcare, school places and leisure.

The amount of funding many public authorities, including the Council, receive from central government is underpinned by Census population estimates. It is crucial that the information collected is as accurate as possible so that we don’t miss out on vital funding streams.

If you need help filling out your Census questionnaire, there is information available in accessible formats such as Braille, audio and British Sign Language clips and guidance in 57 different languages. A helpline is also available on 0300 0201 101 (text relay for hard of hearing 18001 0300 0201 160).

Completing the Census questionnaire is required by law – and you could face a £1,000 fine if you do not complete it.
