Special Educational Needs

Bradford Council is firmly committed to the principle of inclusion and to ensuring that all the children and young people across the district have a real chance of success in their lives

For this reason, as a local education authority, we seek to provide a range of educational opportunities so that, wherever possible, they will be educated alongside their peers in their local community. For most children with special educational needs, this provision will be made in their local neighbourhood school.

Some mainstream schools will have additional resources for children with hearing or visual difficulties or with speech and language difficulties.

For children and young people whose needs are greater, Bradford District has eleven special schools that provide high quality support for a range of different needs. In addition, our SEN and Learning Support Services offer schools, parents and pupils a number of different services, which share the common aim of promoting greater inclusion and supporting the educational attainment and achievement of these children and young people.

The Special Educational Needs Team aim is to ensure that children and young people within the Bradford District experiencing special educational needs have the best possible education and the opportunity to fulfil their potential and play a full part in the life of their school and community. To achieve this we will fully support the Government's SEN Strategy 'Removing Barriers to Achievement' by:

  • further developing effective early intervention,
  • setting high expectations and raising achievement,
  • supporting schools to remove barriers to learning and
  • improving our partnership working.
