Ceremonies mark start of work on new special schools
Construction work has now begun on two new special schools in the Bradford District.
Both projects are being funded by Bradford Council, and will open to pupils in September 2013.
High Park Special School, for pupils with communication and interaction difficulties, is moving to a new school building on the old Thorn Park School site in Heaton. Oastler’s School for children with Emotional, Social and Behavioural needs is being built close to Bolling Hall Park in BD4.
The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Cllr Naveeda Ikram, joined Council representatives and delegates from each school, Integrated Bradford and its construction partner, FMP Limited, to celebrate the start of the two new projects. The completion of these schools is the final part of the Council’s ground-breaking reorganisation of all the special schools in the district.
High Park Special School, designed by architects AEDAS, is a co-educational through-school catering for 80 pupils aged 3-19 years, with communication and interaction difficulties including autism.
Oastler’s School, designed by architects BDP, will be a co-educational school catering for a total of 80 pupils of secondary school age (11 to 19). It will comprise learning spaces offering a variety of layouts to support both independent and collaborative learning.
Both buildings will be energy efficient and are as environmentally sustainable as possible. For instance High Park School will recycle many parts of the old school building which will be crushed for use in the foundations and both schools have sustainable drainage systems.
