The School Governance and Workforce Development Team

The School Governance and Workforce Development Team provides a consultancy, advice and guidance service to school governors. We are highly experienced in dealing with governing body and school leadership issues.

The service provides an all inclusive package to school governors. This includes an annual training programme, providing a comprehensive range of courses for governors, access to guidance, advice and information about governance issues, a telephone helpline, half Termly newsletter (Notepad) and Termly 'Briefing Notes' to sign post issues of importance to governing bodies. In addition the service administers the recruitment and appointment of governors, maintains a database of all governors (approx. 2,700), and undertakes statutory work in relation to governing body constitution and procedures.

The three core activities provided for all governing bodies are:

  • The governing body constitution and procedural matters
  • Administering the process of governor recruitment
  • Ensuring governing bodies are aware of their responsibilities

We provide the following services to schools, governors and governing bodies on a subscription basis:

  • Clerking Service
  • Information and Advice
  • Governor Training and Development

We hope that all governing bodies will opt for the all inclusive annual subscription to the Governing Schools package which is a combination of the training and advice packages. However, there is the option to purchase the services separately. For information relating to the cost of subscription for your school please contact School Governor Service directly.

Support for Governors - A variety of groups exist to support governors in their work and to enable links between governors and Education Services at the Council:

School Governor Area Briefings

There are currently two area briefings which meet once per term and cover Bradford and Keighley. The briefings are made up of up to two governors from each governing body and are supported by a representative from School Governor Service and a clerk. The briefings provide an opportunity for governor representatives to gather information, to support them in their work. The meetings are also being developed as a vehicle for consultations from Education Services at the Council together with other agencies related to education in the District.
