BSF Phase 2

Funding secured for next wave

Funding has now been secured for Phase 2 of the Building Schools for the Future programme.

Work is well underway on the sites for the three new special schools co-located at Greenhead, Beckfoot and Grange Technology College. Work has also started on the Hearing Impairment Unit at Hanson School.

Councillor Kelly comments: “Its incredibly exciting to receive the funding confirmation. It has been a difficult process securing funding during the global economic crisis but we are still on track for the new schools to open in March 2011.”

The next stage in Bradford will involve new secondary special schools being co-located at Grange Technology College, Beckfoot School, Hanson and Greenhead School. Hanson will include the Hearing Impaired Unit, Beckfoot with Hazel Beck Secondary Special School, Grange with BD5 Secondary Special School, Greenhead with Beechcliffe Secondary Special School.

In addition, three new primary special schools will be co-located on the sites of mainstream schools: Delius at Bradford Moor and Lapage, Chellow at Heaton and Phoenix at the new-build Guardhouse, Keighley (soon to be called Merlin Top). This is in addition to a new primary school at Guardhouse. Work is set to start in 2009 and the new schools are due to open in 2010/2011.

This will deliver a major strategic reorganisation of special education in Bradford which will involve the closure of the ten existing special schools, Co-located means they will be built on the same site as the mainstream schools and will share some facilities and activities and work closely together.
